Project History
The BibleText project was opened in 2006 to produce a website for Christians to
use for Bible Study. The aims of the project were simple -
- To offer full text search of the Bible for readers
- To offer quick and easy lookup of definitions from the Bible Dictionary
- To enable topics to be created, which then link to a list of relevant verses / passages
- To offer integration of Wikipedia articles, for further research of names, places
and phrases
- To offer a bookmarking service for users to keep track of their favourite parts
of the Bible
- To offer an SMS sending service where verses of the Bible can be sent via mobile
SMS in SMS shorthand
To fulfil the aims of the BibleText project, we decided to use the following technology
-
- Database driven pages served by .Net
- Bible Text is actually stored in SQL Server and delivered by pages written in VisualBasic
- Javascript and AJAX is used to pull random verses, definitions and Wikipedia articles
straight onto the page without reloading the entire page
The BibleText project has been up and running for a couple of years now, and we
are really happy with the results. It enables our users to read the Bible in and
entirely new way, and it makes it really easy for users to find out more about the
names and places that are written about in the Bible.

We welcome comments and suggestions. As this project is a work-in-progress, we will
consider implementing any useful ideas as long as we don't overload our servers.
